Tips to Choosing the Right Toys for Cats

Cats too need to be entertained. More than play it is about satisfying their natural hunting instincts. So, what toys do felines prefer? There are so many available in the market, it becomes difficult to arrive at a final list. Before getting any toys for the feline friends at home, it is important to understand the nature of the pets. Cats are hunters and like to play in the same way. Dogs, on the other hand, play for social experience. They also bond with their parents over a game. But with cats, it is more a solitary play than a bonding activity.

It is about satisfying their need to catch a prey or hunt. And hence they don’t need just any toy but specific toys. A toy that works for one cat might not work for the others. Here is the reason. There are two types of hunters when it comes to felines. The specialist hunters prefer to hunt only a certain kind of prey such as a mouse or bird. The generalist hunters are those who are not specific. They hunt everything that moves. So, it is better to identify the kind of hunter the cat is before getting a toy.

Cat toys are categorized into solo play and interactive play. With majority of cats being indoors, pet parents want to get toys that entertain them and will keep them safe indoors. When the feline is playing alone with a toy or an object, it is called solo play. This is usually the case when pet parents are not around. So, provide a lot of options when the cat is engaged in solo play most of the time. Interactive play is when the pet parent too involves in the play. Rotate the toys from time to time, so that the pets don’t get bored playing with the same set of toys.
